| History: | "During the preliminary surveying for the Texas & Pacific Railroad in 1881,the surveyors found this area so desolate that they called it ""Satan Flats"" in their notes. But the mapmakers, in handlettering the name on their maps, made their capital ""S"" as a tall thin curving letter, which was incorrectly interpreted as a capital ""I"". Local inhabitants used the incorrect name." |
